Industrial Training Institute
This institute offers training in 21 trades. The trades
include: Carpenter, Electrician, Plumber, Fitter, Welder,
Instrument Mechanic, Machinist (composite),
Machinist-Grinder, Tool and Die Maker, Turner, Electronics
Mechanic , Mechanic -- Refrigeration and Air Conditioning,
Draughtsman (Civil & Mechanical), Computer Operator and
Programming Assistant, Stenographer (English, Hindi),
Cutting & Sewing, Data Entry Operator, Information
Technology & Electronics System Maintenance (ITESM),
Automobile (COE). Total maximum sanctioned intake is 376
students per year.
INTRODUCTION
The Directorate of Technical Education in Union Territory of
Chandigarh has four technical institutes under its control viz.
Central Polytechnic (CPC), Government Polytechnic for women (GPW),
Industrial Training Institute (ITI) and Government Central
Crafts Institute for Women (GCCIW). These institutes cater to
the Supervisory and skilled manpower needs of the industry in
and around the city Beautiful of Chandigarh.
ABOUT ITI CHANDIGARH
The Industrial Training Institute was set up in 1962 in the
erstwhile state of joint Punjab with modest motive to supply
trained manpower in areas of mechanical, electrical, electronics
and automobile engineering for meeting the requirements of the
local industry. Training is also imparted in non-engineering
areas of Stenography and Data Entry. The Institute as over the
years developed into one of the best ITIs of the region with
excellent training being imparted in Electronics/Electrical/
mechanical areas.
The institute is one of the oldest and largest institutes in
the northern region of the country. It has presently twenty one
(21) trades and have maximum sanctioned seats of three hundred
and seventy six (376) trainees every year. The institute has
supplied man power to many reputed companies in the country and
abroad.
CENTRE OF EXCELLENCE
This Institute has been selected for opening of Centre of
Excellence in the 'Automobile Sector' by the Ministry of Labour,
Govt. of India.
Training under this scheme 'Centre of Excellence in
Automobile Sector' is being imparted w.e.f Session 2005-06 and
this consist of 6 Modules of basic training for one year in
Automobile trade with active involvement of the industry in the
city. The trade testing is done National Council of Vocational
training in July every year.

Tool & Die Maker and Draughtsman (Civil and Mechanical).

CURRICULUM
The curriculum of each trade is uniformly sub divided into
activities and tasks to be carried out every week. The
curricula of most of the trades as been revised and updated
by the trade committees constituted by the Directorate
general of Employment and Training (DGET). The curriculum
also sows the achievement level at the end of each unit.
FACULTY
The Institute has well qualified and experienced faculty. Two
of the faculty numbers are Toppers of their Batch. Ten faculty
numbers hold degrees in engineering. Besides this there are 16
diploma holders. Three faculty members have post graduate
degrees.
The faculty up dates its knowledge and skills by attending
refreshers courses at Institutes of excellence like NITTTR,
CSTARI, ATI’S, NIC, CDAC etc.
ADDITIONAL ACTIVITIES
The Institute is the RI (Related Institutions) centre for the
apprentices of the Industry of Chandigarh.
The Institute has well equipped workshops and labs for
Training. Under the World Bank aided project the Institute has
started two new trades viz. TOOL & DIE MAKER and MACHINIST
GRINDER. The Institute also received AV equipment and staff
training.
The Institute has arranged training programme for the
beneficiaries of Nehru Rozgar Yojna (NRY) of the Chandigarh
housing board, Chandigarh.
Part time classes are also being held for Fitter, Machinist,
Carpenter and Computer courses under the community polytechnic
scheme.
Works Skill Competition organized by CII (NR) for industrial
workers is done in this Institute.
MAIN MACHINERY & EQUIPMENT IN LABS AND WORKSHOPS
The institute has well equipped labs and workshops with
latest machinery and equipment which is being utilized for
imparting training to the students. A brief introduction to some
of the labs and workshops is as under:-
- Tool and Die Maker Workshop
This workshop has got latest machines supplied under the
Vocational Training project (VTP) with World Bank Assistance
from the ministry of labour Govt. of India. The machines
include Milling machines-Horizontal & Vertical & Universal
lathes, Grinders-plain & surface, Tool & cutter, Universal
lathes-all Geared, Tool room lathe and Drilling machine,
Radial Drilling machine, etc.
- Machinist Grinder Workshop
Like the Tool and Die Maker this workshop also has latest
and sophisticated machines installed in it. The main
machines include Grinding Machines-Plain,Surface &
Cylindrical, Universal Tool & cutter, HMT Vikram Lathe
Machines, Honning machine etc.
This laboratory has the distinction of having the
distinguished scientist Prof. Yash Pal teach students during
his visit on 22.01.96 about satellites in India. The lab is
well equipped with electronic test equipment like Cathode
Ray Oscilloscopes, Pulse generator, Signal Tracer, VHT TV,
Wobbluoscope, L C R Bridge, Digital Multimeter, B/W & Colour
TV Pattern Generators etc.
The Computer Centre of the Institute was inaugurated by
the Director General of Employment and Training (D.G.E. & T)
Ministry of Labour Govt. of India on 21.04.98 when he
visited the ITI Chandigarh along with representatives of
Confederation of Indian Industry. The centre has laptop,
PENTIUM computers, Ink Jet, laser and dot matrix printers
and Latest Software. There is a separate networking lab in
which all systems are connected through LAN.
- Machinist (Composite) Workshop
The shop has machines such as Shapers, Milling, Lathes,
Slotters, Drilling Machine, Power Hacksaw, Planner and Bench
Grinder. All the machines are properly maintained and fully
utilized.
This workshop of the institute has maximum number of
trainees working on jobs with files in their hands. In
addition to over 50 vices it has Lathe, Drilling Machine
(Pillar and Bench type), Pedestal Grinder and power hacksaw.
The workshop has all types of motors and electrical
equipment in it. Coil winding machine (manual and
automatic), Drying oven, Generator, Electrical Machine
Trainer and cut models of various motors.
- Automobile (Centre of Excellence) Workshop
These shops gave demonstration models of two and four
stroke Engines-both petrol and Diesel. Other equipment like
compressor, Hydraulic jack, Hydraulic hoist, Car washer
reciprocating type electrically operated wit 3 HP motor.
One Bus, one Car, one Three Wheeler and a Moped are also
available in running condition.
CNC turning Machine, General purpose lathes, power
hacksaw and pedestal grinders etc.
ACHIEVEMENTS
The Institute has following achievements to its credit in the
recent past :
Best ITI award by the DGET
The Institute as been awarded the BEST ITI award by the
Directorate General of Employment and Training. New Delhi in
1995 in Instrument Mechanic.

Visit by World Bank Review Mission
The Institute was selected for the visit of World Bank Review
Mission in 1996.
Visit by AICTE team headed by Professor Yash Pal
The eminent Scientist of India, Prof. Yash Pal along with
members of the All India Council for Technical Education visited
this Institute on 22.01.96 to study the system of Industrial
Training.
Selection to promote Industry Institute Interaction by CII
The Institute as been selected by the CII-DGET to implement a
model project of Industry Institute Interaction.
World Skill competition
This institute has been selected by DGET, Ministry of labour,
New Delhi to conduct World Skill competition in which major
companies like- Hero Honda, Maruti Suzuki, Nestle India, Shriram
fertilizers, ACC cement, Denso India and others of northern
India take part.
