Salient Features

Government College for Girls, Sector- 42, is situated in southern part of chandigarh the city – Beautiful. The college with its impressive building ad rich infrastructure cater to the academic and professional needs of girls not only from chandigarh and adjoining rural areas but also from different states of India. The college was established in the year 1982 with Arts and Commerce faculties and was initially located in the school building in sector- 19, Chandigarh before it was shifted to its present campus in the year 1987. At the initial stage, there was 300 students and 20 lectures in the college. The science faculty was added in the year 1989. The college id affiliated to Punjab University, Chandigarh. A twenty four year old college, serving the cause of women empowerment, has entered the stage of confidence and optimism. A touch of community life amongst the students leads them not only to grow in awareness towards community needs and aspirations but also towards emotional integration of the nation. This college provides education is the faculties of Arts, Science (Medical, Non- Medical, Biotechnology, Computer Science, and B.C.A) and commerce. As many as 150 subject combinations to the tastes and needs of girls are available in the arts stream. It also provides Honours Courses in thirteen subjects. Besides, three vocational courses in the subject of Functional English, Functional Hindi and Principles & Practices of Insurance are also provided with the assistance of U.G.C. These courses are of placement value. C – Toss programme was established during the session 2004-05 in collaboration with I.T. Department of Chandigarh Administration.

There are 101 faculty members who provide quality education to about 3000 students. As many as fifty one Ph. Ds and thirty six M. thils amongst the hundred and one strong body of lectures provide a special glamour to this institution in terms of academic excellence. Seventy non – teaching members provide assistance in buffer functioning of the college. The college is well versed with the schemes and programmes of UGC like Development plans, Travel Grants, Teacher Fellowship Awards and Research Grants are availed of by the faculty members from time to time.

The college also has thee units of N.S.S and one unit of NCC (Army Wing) and many subject societies. The competent faculty, has infrastructure newly constructed canteen, well equipped library, vast space for play ground and well established hostel go a long way in preparing the students self – reliant and self – disciplined citizens of India. Other co- curricular and community friendly activities like vermin composting, college magazine “SHIKHAR”, Alumni Association add to the development of the personality of young girls. The students of the college have brought lamels to the college every year in the fields of academic, sports, cultural activities like music, dance, dreams, debates, quiz competitions etc.

College Activities:-

Placement Cell

The college gas on active placement cell and provides assistance to students regarding placements, cover awareness, job opportunities and awareness regarding higher studies in the fields of Arts, Science and commerce. The college has an active career Youth Club comprising a hundred students from all the streams. They are in regular contact with the activities of the placement cell. It is our endeavour to train these students in the technique of profile making, group discussions and interviews. They are further guided to disseminate the information gained to at least five students each thus setting a chain of awareness regarding their career opportunities available after graduation. During the month of November, the various companies are invited to interact with the students through awareness and there towards the closing of the session the February and March interviews are conducted. Selected students are given placement letters in the campus.

Last year many companies and organizations of repute liK, Wipro, Dell, EXL, AIISEC, Frank Finn, TCY and CMRD visited our college and about 80 students were short listed and offered placements. Monika Kaushik, Swati Poonia, Megha, Pooja, Ishita, Sharveen, Navneet, Jasmeet, Himani, Upjeet (of B.A.III). Neha, Harsimrat (of B.Sc. III). Shiney, Shwet (of B.Com. III) were selected by Wipro and were offered a handsome pay package. Ms. Monica and Ms. Priyanka of B.A. III Functional English were offered placements with AIR Chandigarh. Ms. Pinky and Ms. Deepa were offered placements with AIR Imphal. Ms. Arjinder kaur and three more girls from B.A. III were selected by the placement agency CMRD. The placement cell comprises five faculty members and holds regular discussions with placement cell of other city colleges and with higher authorities i..e. DPI (colleges) and UGEIB in order to abreast of the latest developments in the placement field.

College Diary

The college maintains a record of various activities and achievements of students as well as faculty. Students are encouraged to participate in debate, extempore, poetry recitation, poetry writing, essay writing, story writing, declamation, Blood Donation Camp, NSS camp, Workshops and seminars. They are accordingly warded. This year this activity was conductivity in August. This will help to locate talent among the students and then groom them for inter – college and intervarsity competitions. Students of Functional English actively covered all the events in the capacity of reporters. This way they also contribute towards the college news letter SCOOP.


College has three N.S.S. units having 100 N.S.S volunteers in each unit. Ten days NSS camp was inaugurated on 26.9.06 by Mrs. Swati Sharma, I.A.S, S.D.M. (E), Chandigarh Administration, N.S.S. Volunteers in collaboration with different NGO’S organized various activities like Blood Donation, Tree plantation, Cycle rally and health awareness program at college level, Volunteers participated in a number of projects namely campus cleanliness, training in first-air and fir-fighting and various awareness drives against AIDS, Drug Absuse, health and sanitation and pulse polio.


College has started with N.C.C. (Army Wing) sub unit from the session 2006-07. At present, 56 students have been enrolled for senior wing girls cadets.


College has 02 blocks in the hostel for 260 students.
