SPORTS PANORAMA
Sports Department have the following well established and
adequately equipped sports stadias and playing grounds in
the different disciplines of the sports have come up
covering all the zone of city.
Lake Sports Complex: This Complex was earlier known as
Lake Club and was set up in 1961 making it one of the oldest
sporting clubs of the city. It has a large club house spread on
10 acre campus. Now it has been renamed as Lake Sports Complex.
The Lake Sports Complex rowing course was the venue of the 1989
Senior Asian Rowing Championship and the 1994 Junior Asian
Rowing Championship. Many National Level Tournaments have been
organized here besides Rowing, Canoeing & Kayaking and Sailing
events are also taking care of. It has playing facilities for
Tennis, Table Tennis, Billiards and Swimming. The Squash Court
has been completed and now in function. Four synthetic tennis
courts have also been completed. Four Nos. grassy courts have
also been converted into maroon bajri courts. Recently
Department has organised AITA series at Lake Sports Complex
which acclaimed good response from throughout of India.
A Hi-Tech Gym having imported machines has been established
at the Complex. The floodlights shall be installed very soon. A
new kiddy Pool has been constructed at the Lake Sports Complex.
There is a proposal for the construction of Multi-purpose Hall
which having the facilities in the disciplines of Volleyball,
Badminton, Basketball, Table Tennis, Gymnastic and Wrestling
Sector 7 Sports Complex: This club was set up in 1960.
The stadium and various courts and practice halls shall occupy a
6-acre land. The following facilities are available over there:
athletics, gymnastics with imported equipment, squash. However,
basketball and volleyball courts are floodlighted one. Many
National tournaments/events have also been organised here
alongwith the North Zone Athletic Meet in 1997.
Recently, the cinder track have been relayed and flooring in
the Gymnasium Hall has been replaced.
Sector 10 Skating Rink: The rink was constructed in
1970. It has capacity of 1000 spectators. Four important
tournaments including National Skating Championship 1972 and
1974 are being organised here. Nationals of other games have
also been organised here. This indoor hall has Kota stone
flooring. This centre offers coaching facilities in Artistic,
speed and Roller Hockey events of the skating discipline. Speed
track to be constructed at this centres.
Steel chairs have been installed in place of Fiber glass
chairs which have been broken.
Sector 16 Cricket Stadium: The stadium was constructed
in 1960 on a 10 acre site. In addition to the pitch it has
spectators seating capacity of 25000, which has been increased
to 35000. It has new changing rooms for competing teams,
practice nets, Media Centre, Spectator Gallery, T.V. Towers,
Multi-Gym facilities. Major tournaments were held here like,
World Cup Matches, (Men & Women both) various International
Matches and test ties. Recently Ranji Trophy match between
Haryana and Jharkhand has also been organised. The main pitch
and the practice pitches have been relayed very recently. The
up-gradation of Cricket Stadium has been completed by adding the
various facilities at par International Standard/BCCI for
hosting the one day/Test matches. Two practice matches was
played between Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Punjab State-XI on 4th
and 5th October, 2006.
One Day International between India v/s Australia has been
organized on 8.10.2007 smoothly and successfully. A TORO Machine
with the cost of about 18.50 lacs has been purchased for the
maintenance of the Cricket ground /field.
Sector 17 Football Stadium: The stadium was
constructed in 1960 on a 4-acre site. In addition to the field
and spectators gallery, it has 2 rooms, Multi-Gym, Changing Room
Important tournaments like, North Zone Football Tournament 1997,
All India Football Invitation Tournament have been organised.
One of the best centres for football training loaded with latest
training gadgets. The automatic gun sprinkler system shall be
installed very soon for which the Administrative Approval have
been issued to Engineering Department for which the work has
been started and having to completion now.
The proposal for the up-gradation of the Football Centre has
been initiated with the Architecture /Engineering Department.
Sector 18 Hockey Stadium: The stadium was constructed
in 1960 on a 4-acre land. In addition to the field and spectator
seating of 1000, it has changing Room, coach Room, Multi-Gym.
Important tournaments have been organised here include All India
Gurmeet Memorial Hockey for the last 20 years. National Women
Hockey 1989, All India Invitation Hockey Tournament, besides
Canadian & England clubs have played friendly ties. In the
memory of Sh. Dharam Singh, a six-n-side hockey tournament has
also been introduced since 2003. A new six-a-side hockey ground
has been created on the side of New Public School. The automatic
gun sprinkler system shall be installed very soon for which the
work has been started.
Sector 23 Yoga Health Centre: The centre was
constructed in 1962 on a 2-acre site. It has 4 halls and a
swimming pool exclusively for ladies. It has full fledged Squash
coaching centre also.
Now the Swimming Pool has been converted into All weather
Swimming Pool to make the swimming facilities during winter
season also.
Sector 23 Swimming Pool: The pool was constructed in
1958 on a 3-acre site. Seating accommodates 300 spectators. In
addition to the pool, the complex has Coach Room, Changing Room
with filtration plant. This Swimming Pool is of 25 mtrs only for
training purposes. The kiddies pool is constructed for the kids
separately and has been made functional.
Sector 23 Table Tennis Hall: This Hall was inaugurated
in May 1996 with total playing area, with wooden flooring of 42M
x 14M of International standard. In this Hall 10 Table Tennis
Tables can be placed and there are 48 metallic Halide lamps for
indoor lighting of the Hall. The Hall is of International
standard. So many National events like' All India Veteran, North
Zone Junior & Senior Table Tennis Tournaments, All India Open
tournaments have been organised here.
There is a proposal for the air conditioning of the Table
Tennis Hall and under process with the Engineering Department.
Sector 42 Sports Complex: This Sports Complex was
constructed in 1988 on a 40-acre site. The Hockey stadium can
accommodate 30,000 spectators. In addition to the Astroturf
field and stadium, the complex has Indoor Boxing, Judo,
Wrestling, Weight Lifting & Badminton (wooden floor), Halls and
also have coaching centres of Kho-Kho, Kabaddi, Handball and
Bridge. A fully furnished hostel is also a part of this complex
where inmates of Chandigarh Football, Hockey and Cricket Academy
are staying. Important tournaments have been held here includes
Indira Gandhi International Gold Cup, Asian School Hockey,
National School Games Twice, All India Women Festival, Indo-Uzabekistak
1977, Indo Pan Am Hockey 1995, All India Hockey Tournaments etc.
The construction work for new indoor basketball courts shall be
started very soon. The Kabaddi, Kho-Kho Handball Courts have
been completed and made functional. The drawings for
construction of changing room, toilets, bathrooms etc. on the
other side of N-Choe has been approved and returned back to
quarter concerned for further action. A Hi-Tech Gym has been
established in the Sports Hostel of the Complex.
In the last year after the relaying of the new turf at Hockey
Stadium, India V/S Pakistan, India V/S Spain and India V/S
Malaysia U-19 test series held at Hockey Stadium, Sector-42,
Chandigarh. Good numbers Indian Hockey Camps of (men & women)
have been held here in preparation of International
competitions. Floodlights for main hockey field has been
installed. The work for installation of Flood lights at handball
courts has been started. The work for 4 Nos. maroon clay tennis
courts is in completion stage. The work for construction of
Volleyball Courts is also in progress.
Administrative approval for the construction of indoor
Basketball has already been accorded but the work is yet to be
started.
Sector 46 Sports Complex: This Sports Complex was
constructed in 1975 on a 4-acre site. The stadium accommodates
500 spectators. Provision of Grassy Athletic Track, Cinder
Volleyball and Concrete Basketball Courts with Flood lights are
there. The athletic track would converted into 10 lanes
synthetic track of International standard and a new pavilion
building shall also be constructed after dismantling the
existing building.
Sports Complex, Sector 56: Construction of a new
international level sports complex in Sector 56 on 23 acres of
land which will have nine lane Athletic Synthetic Track and a
Football ground with 40,000 capacity of spectators. Hall for
Indoor Games are also planned to accommodate facilities for
disciplines of Volleyball, Handball, Judo, Wrestling and Boxing.
Coaching Centres at Schools and Colleges: The Sports
Department provides coaches to the various centres. Coaching is
being in the discipline of Athletics Cricket, Judo, Gymnastics,
Handball, Badminton, Basketball, Tennis and Kho-Kho. Besides
providing coaching facilities and technical and tactical
training/coaching at said various centres.
Sports Department has about 48 Coaches working in the various
stadia/centres who are imparting training to the players on very
nominal charges of membership. Facilities of the grounds/Courts
of the stadias to organized tournaments/championships are also
available on usual booking charges. Rates fixed for booking
charges and membership fee may kindly be seen at flag “A” &”B”
please.
